10/24/2009 – Week Seven Recap
Captains: Laura, Brookelynn, Emily
What’s up soccer fans? I know there has been a lot of Bomber updates lately, but it will be easier to write this before too much time passes. Just three weeks to go until the season ends.
On Saturday we had a 9:00 AM game in Grass Valley, playing against the Funky Monkeys. Being an early game, the dew was still thick on the field. I helped the other coach set up the goals and my shoes and socks were soaked through within minutes. Each team started with 9 players (no subs), but we had two more girls show up a few minutes late.
Emily started in goalie after playing well there the prior week. We had a much better start than our previous 9:00 game, and the girls were hustling. Midway through the first half the Monkeys managed to get a shot past Emily for a goal. (Monkeys 1-0) But not long after, Samantha made a great shot on the other end and tied the game. (Tie 1-1) The defense in the first half was outstanding, and we had several shots on goal.
In the second half, I tried to maintain positions as much as possible to keep our chemistry going. It really paid off as the girls seemed to improve as the game went on. Emma took over as goalie and stopped everything that came at her. For the most part our defense held firm and kept the ball off our half of the field. Anika, Hailey and Cassidy all deserve recognition for outstanding defense this week. The offense was also clicking and we had several quality passes and shots on goal. Brookelynne found her shot and scored two in a row. (Bombers 3-1) With time winding down, the other team made a pretty decent attack, and we had a couple of close calls. Then Laura took the ball the entire length of the field, but her attack resulted in a goal kick. Their goalie made the kick and Laura got in front of it. She dribbled toward their goal with the keeper out of position and took a shot at the wide open net. The refs blew the final whistle as the ball went through the goal! (Bombers 4-1)
It was an exciting game for me to watch, especially after missing last week’s big win. Now we have a winning streak going and they are playing better every week. We have our final practice this week, and then we play in Grass Valley again on Saturday. Go Bombers!

10/17/2009 – Week Six Recap
Captains: None
With another game scheduled for tomorrow, I wanted to finish the recap for last week. I was out of town visiting family in Utah, so I had to miss this game. Our practice had also been rained out, so we were without captains. Coach Jason was set to fill in for me, and I figured this would probably be the week of our first win since I was gone.
For the recap, I’m going to post Jason’s email to me afterwards:
Hey man the girls did it, just like we said, 6-0 today! Even despite my coaching!
It was a good day, I gave all the girls stars and they were very happy. Laura had 3 and Brooklyn had 3 goals. The others had lots of assists and played great defense as well. We didn’t have Olivia either so I only had 2 subs. The other team suffered from our same issue, tiring out and walking and it worked out to our advantage. Hope you guys are doing good! Tell Anika we missed her at the game.
So I guess we are buying a bag of snickers!
FYI here was the starting line up. Subs(Brooklyn, Aria)
L FWD: Ariana
R FWD: Samantha
Mid MID: Hailey
L Mid: Laura
R Mid: Jessie
L D: Rosemary
M D: Emily
R D: Cassy
Goalie: Ema
Second Half starting line up. Subs (Samantha, Aria)
L FWD: Laura
R FWD: Brooklyn
Mid MID: Emma
L Mid: Cassy
R Mid: Ariana
L D: Haily
M D: Rosemary
R D: Jessie
Goalie: Emily
And my response:
I can’t believe it!! SIX TO NOTHING. I’m so glad they got the monkey off their back (maybe I’m the monkey), and put together a great game. I’m sure you did a great job too. Was Emily comfortable as goalie? We need to give some of our younger girls experience there for next year, so maybe we should work her into the rotation.
They definitely earned their stars and snickers. Hopefully we can get a repeat performance. I will be depressed if we don’t get another win now (:
Here’s hoping for that repeat tomorrow! Go Bombers!

10/10/2009 – Week Five Recap
Captains: Ariana, ?? (I need to look this up)
Another brief recap as I catch up. This week was another heart breaker.
Thanks to our Friday night scrimmages at Newcastle, I think we started to finally feel comfortable on our ”home” field. The first half was our best soccer yet, and with a goal from Laura, we ended the half up by 1. (Bombers 1-0)
The second half was almost an equally solid performance, but it didn’t go our way. We had several shots on goal but never found the net. With the game winding down, our opponents scored a goal. (Tie 1-1) And again, at the end of the game, they managed to slip a shot past both Jesse on defense and Cassidy in goal. (Mini Gators 2-1)
It is always disappointing to lose when you played so well, but I am seeing the improvement in our team. This is a much better team than the record shows, and I know some wins are coming. Go Bombers!

10/03/2009 – Week Four Recap
Captains: ?? (I need to look this up)
This recap is long overdue. I have some catch up to do, so it will be brief.
The game had a 9:00 start which was our earliest start yet. We were at the Skyridge field which is a nice place to play. After a quick warm-up I put the players in position and we were ready to start…or so I thought. We won the kick off, but we immediately kicked it to an opposing player. The girl on the other team who picked it up was a BIG girl. Just tall and thick, and (as we soon found out), quick. She dribbled it right through our entire team and took a shot on goal, scoring within the first 15 seconds of the game. Ouch. (Geckos 1-0)
At that point I think the girls woke up and realized we were playing soccer! The ball went back and forth, but for the most part we played a dominant first half despite the first play. On one of our attacks, Ariana found the goal with a big shot. Goal! (Tie 1-1)
At half time I told the girls we already had 5 star players thanks to amazing work on defense and a big goal by Ariana. I told them to keep it up defensively and we’ll be fine. Based on the first half I never expected what was coming. I’m not going to break down the second half in detail…it is too painful. The end result, though, is that the Geckos scored 4 consecutive goals to our none for a final score of 5-1. (Geckos 5-1)
They really outhustled us in the second half and completely earned the win. Not a memorable game overall, but hopefully the experience was for our good. Go Bombers!

9/26/2009 – Week Three Recap
Captains: Anika, Aria, Olivia
Looking for our first win, the Bombers took to the pitch again in Newcastle. This week we were up against Team USA out of Meadow Vista.
Our focus this week was defense. We wanted to shut down the other team and have a chance at a goal or two. The girls did not disappoint when it came to their defensive tenacity. Brooklynne started as keeper and was able to make several saves during the first half. Samantha had a few great runs at the opponent’s goal, but we weren’t able to score. (Tie 0-0)
In the second half, I was really happy that we kept the energy level up. I think I am starting to find a good balance of substitutions without hurting our effectiveness. The credit all goes to the girls though for stepping up defensively. Jesse played the second half as keeper. Along with some outstanding defensive help from Rosemary and Cassidy, Jesse was able to keep Team USA from scoring. Unfortunately, Team USA played well defensively and kept us from scoring also. (Tie 0-0)
Our injuries were limited this week, with only Ariana coming out temporarily after taking a shot to the stomach. The first win still eludes us, but we are moving in the right direction. Go Bombers!
Star Players: Brooklynne, Jessica, Cassidy, Rosemary
